eSIM for Mexico From Canada: Beyond Your Carrier's Roaming Pass

For a winter week or more in Cancún, the Riviera Maya or Puerto Vallarta, compare your Rogers, Bell or Telus roaming pass — which keeps your Canadian number working for a charge on each day you use it — with a travel data eSIM installed before you fly, which runs on a Mexican network while your Canadian line stays on for calls and texts. The longer the stay and the more you rely on data away from the resort, the more that comparison matters.
Resort Wi-Fi covers the lobby and the pool. It does not cover the bus to Tulum, the ferry to Isla Mujeres or the walk into Sayulita.
How a roaming pass and a data eSIM differ
A roaming pass is your own Canadian plan, used in Mexico under your carrier’s travel terms: same number, same texts, and data from your plan’s allowance, with a charge for each day the pass is used. A travel data eSIM is a second line for data only, bought for the days and country you need. The structural difference is how the cost grows. A pass adds a charge for every day you use the phone; a data plan is a fixed choice you make before leaving. For a long weekend that difference is small, and for a two-week stay it is the main thing to compare.
What to check on Rogers, Bell and Telus pages
Each carrier publishes its roaming options for Mexico, and some Canadian plans include Mexico outright, so start with your own plan in your carrier’s app (last checked: October 2026). Then check four things: how much data a day of the pass includes and what happens after, what activity starts a day’s charge, whether there is a cap on pass charges in a billing cycle, and whether hotspot use is allowed — useful if you want to share data with a partner’s phone. If your plan already covers Mexico, you may need nothing else.
Networks around Cancún and Puerto Vallarta
Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar run Mexico’s mobile networks, and each publishes a coverage map on its own website. A travel data eSIM connects through a Mexican network partner; the plan page for Mexico shows what the plan includes, and our plans for Mexico and other destinations list the countries each one covers. Coverage in the hotel zone of Cancún or the centre of Puerto Vallarta is a different question from coverage at a cenote, on a boat to the Marietas Islands or on a jungle road. No plan can promise signal in those places, so download offline maps for excursion days.
Choosing for your kind of trip
| Trip | Roaming pass | Travel data eSIM | Resort Wi-Fi only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long weekend, mostly at the resort | A charge for each of a few days | Works, may be more than you need | Enough if you stay on site |
| One or two weeks with excursions | A charge for every day used | One plan for the stay | Gaps on every day out |
| Mexico, then a stop in the US | Check both countries on your pass | Check both countries on the plan | Only where you have Wi-Fi |
| You need calls to your number | Calls work under your plan | Keep your Canadian line on | Only through Wi-Fi Calling, if offered |
Resort Wi-Fi versus data on excursions
All-inclusive Wi-Fi is fine for messages by the pool and a video call in the evening. The moments that need data are outside: finding your excursion pickup, calling a ride from downtown Playa del Carmen back to the hotel, using a translation app at a market, or checking a ferry time. Those are also the moments when you are standing somewhere with no hotel network. Decide whether your trip is a stay-on-site week or an out-every-day week before choosing.
Setting it up before you fly
Installing in Canada saves fiddling with airport Wi-Fi at Cancún or Puerto Vallarta. You install the travel eSIM through the Simtegre app at home over Wi-Fi before departure, so nothing has to be done on arrival — no QR code to hunt for, no shop, no passport registration. Our installation guides for each phone show how to make it your data line and switch data roaming on for it. Turn off the option that lets data fall back onto your Canadian line when the signal is weak, or a quiet beach day can still start a roaming charge.
Keeping your Canadian number
Leave your Rogers, Bell or Telus line installed and on for calls and texts, with data roaming off. Bank codes still arrive by SMS, though your carrier’s terms decide whether received texts and calls in Mexico are charged, and whether a call starts a day of your pass. Our guide to receiving bank OTPs abroad on an eSIM shows the settings. Entry documents are outside this post; as of 2026, check the Mexican government’s official immigration pages and the Government of Canada’s travel advice for Mexico before you go.
