What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into the phone itself. Instead of pushing a plastic chip into a tray, you download the plan — normally by scanning a QR code — and the phone treats it like any other line. Here is what matters if you leave the country more than once or twice a year.
How an eSIM works
A phone with eSIM support carries a small permanent chip that can hold several mobile plans. Buying a plan gives you an activation code; in Simtegre it is simply there, in the order. The phone writes the plan onto the chip, and from that point it behaves like an ordinary SIM card.
Because the eSIM sits beside your physical SIM, the phone runs both at once: your own number stays reachable while the eSIM carries data on a local network. Most phones can also store more than one travel plan at a time, which is what makes a run of trips manageable.
eSIM or a local SIM bought on arrival
A local SIM means finding the counter, showing a passport, filling in a form and swapping a chip small enough to lose in a hotel room — and doing it again at the next border. An eSIM arrives instantly, installs in about two minutes, and cannot be misplaced.
The trade-off is worth stating plainly: a local SIM gives you a local phone number, which a data plan does not. If you need a local number for a callback, buy the local SIM. If what you need is internet, the eSIM wins on time — and it wins by more with every extra border.
Which phones support eSIM?
iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most recent mid-range and flagship Android phones. There are regional exceptions — some models sold in a few markets ship without eSIM — so it is worth a look before you buy a plan.
Why it suits frequent travellers
The value is not in one trip; it is in not repeating the setup. One app holds the catalogue, the order history and every plan you have installed, so the second trip is a search and a payment rather than a new app, a new account and a card typed in again.
You install before leaving, and the phone finds a network on its own on arrival. Your messaging apps, your banking app and your number carry on exactly as they were.
Is an eSIM secure?
At least as secure as a plastic SIM. The plan lives in a dedicated secure element, it cannot be lifted out of a card you left behind, and installing or removing one requires the unlocked phone in your hand.
