eSIM for Canada From the UK: What EE, Vodafone and O2 Leave Out
15% off your first eSIM — code WELCOMEBuy eSIM →
Canada is not part of the Europe roaming zone that EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three bundle into many UK plans, so using your UK plan there means a separate roaming add-on or charge set by your carrier — or a travel data eSIM installed before you fly, with your UK line kept on for calls and texts. If the trip also crosses into the US, whether one profile covers both countries becomes the deciding question.
The welcome text from your carrier on arrival at Toronto Pearson or Vancouver is the worst moment to start comparing options, so do it at home.
Why Canada catches UK roamers out
UK roaming has been built around Europe for years: carriers sell plans where the EU and a list of nearby countries feel like home, and anything beyond that falls into a different zone with its own add-ons or rates. Canada is in that second group. A few UK plans include destinations further afield, so the first step is to open your own plan and find the country list for Canada rather than assuming either way. If Canada is not included, your carrier’s roaming page shows what it charges there and which add-ons it sells (last checked: October 2026).
What to read on EE, Vodafone and O2 pages
Each carrier publishes its roaming zones, add-ons and charges, and the names change often enough that a forum post from last year is no guide. Check which zone Canada sits in on your plan, what the add-on includes per day or per pack, whether the US is in the same zone, and how calls and texts received in Canada are charged. Note too whether your plan caps roaming spend; a cap protects you from a large bill but can cut data off mid-trip.
Canada only, or Canada and the US
A trip that stays in Canada — Toronto and Montreal, or the Rockies from Calgary — needs a Canada profile. A trip that crosses into the US, a day at Niagara Falls from the New York side or a drive from Vancouver to Seattle, needs coverage in both countries. Check whether a single plan lists Canada and the US together; if so, one profile covers the whole route, and if not, you will need two. Our plans by country and region show exactly which countries each one includes. If a plan is sold as unlimited, read its fair-use terms on the plan page before relying on it for hotspot or video.
Comparing the options
| Option | Canada | US | Your UK number | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK plan with Canada included | Covered under your plan | Depends on your plan’s list | Works as normal | Your plan’s country list |
| UK carrier roaming add-on | Covered while the add-on runs | Separate zone or add-on, if offered | Works as normal | Add-on terms and how days are counted |
| Canada-only travel eSIM | Data in Canada | Not covered | Stays on for calls and texts | That your route stays in Canada |
| Canada and US travel eSIM | Data in Canada | Data in the US | Stays on for calls and texts | That both countries are on the plan |
Near the border
The border is where phones misbehave. At Niagara Falls, around Windsor and Detroit, or near the Peace Arch crossing south of Vancouver, your phone can latch onto a US network while you are still standing in Canada. On a Canada-only profile that means no data; on a UK roaming add-on it can mean charges in a different zone. Set network selection to manual for your data line — Settings > Cellular > Network Selection on an iPhone, Mobile networks > Network operators on Android — and pick Rogers, Bell or Telus until you actually cross. Entry documents for both countries are outside this post; as of 2026, check the Government of Canada’s official eTA page and the US government’s official ESTA site for what your passport needs.
Setting it up before you fly
Installing at home beats doing it on airport Wi-Fi after a long flight. You install the travel eSIM through the Simtegre app at home over Wi-Fi before departure, so nothing has to be done on arrival — no QR code to hunt for, no shop, no passport registration. Our installation guides for each phone show how to make the travel line your data line and turn data roaming on for it. Then turn off the option that lets data fall back onto your UK line when the signal dips, so a weak signal in the Rockies does not become a roaming charge.
Keeping your UK number reachable
Your UK line stays installed and on for calls and texts, with data roaming off. Bank codes sent by SMS still arrive, though your carrier’s terms decide whether texts and calls received in Canada are charged. If your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling abroad, it can carry calls over hotel Wi-Fi; check its terms for use outside the UK. Our guide to receiving bank OTPs abroad on an eSIM covers the settings that keep codes coming in.
