eSIM for Egypt From the UK: Hurghada and Sharm This Winter

Egypt is not part of the Europe roaming zone that EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three build into UK plans, so a winter week in Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh on your UK plan runs on your carrier’s separate Egypt terms — and the alternative is a travel data eSIM installed before you fly, with your UK line kept on for texts. Resort Wi-Fi handles the pool and the room; the decision is really about the days you leave the hotel.
So plan it from the excursions backwards: list the days you will be out, then pick the connection that covers them.
Why Egypt is a separate roaming decision
UK plans treat the EU and a list of nearby countries much like home. Egypt is outside that list, so data, calls and texts there fall under a different zone, with its own add-ons or rates set by your carrier (last checked: October 2026). One trap is specific to Vodafone customers: Vodafone Egypt shares the brand, but that does not put Egypt inside your UK plan. Vodafone UK’s roaming page decides what you pay there, just as EE’s and O2’s pages do for their customers. Read your own carrier’s page before you go, not a friend’s from another network.
What to check on EE, Vodafone and O2 pages
Look up Egypt on your carrier’s roaming page and note four things: which zone it is in, what an add-on includes per day or per pack, how calls and texts received in Egypt are charged, and whether your plan has a spending cap that could stop data partway through a holiday. Then switch data roaming off on your UK line before landing at Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh, unless you have chosen your carrier’s add-on, so the phone cannot run up charges while you decide.
What resort Wi-Fi actually covers
All-inclusive hotels in El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh or Naama Bay generally offer Wi-Fi, and for messages, photos and an evening video call that may be all you need. What hotel Wi-Fi cannot do is follow you. It ends at the hotel gate, so the transfer, the marina, the old market in Sharm or a coffee in Hurghada’s Sakkala district are all outside it. Speed and coverage inside the resort vary by hotel; your booking page or the hotel itself is the place to ask.
Matching connection to the day

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pool day | At the hotel | Covers it | Not needed | Not needed |
| Boat trip | Giftun Island, Ras Mohammed or Tiran | No | Signal depends on distance from shore | Same limit, on your carrier’s terms |
| Luxor day trip | Road and temples | No | Works where the network reaches | Works where the network reaches, on your carrier’s terms |
| Desert or Mount Sinai | Inland, away from towns | No | Network coverage thins out | Network coverage thins out |
| Town evening | Marina, market or old town | No | Covers maps and ride-hailing | Covers it, at your carrier’s rate |
Data on excursions
The days that need data are the ones where something has to be arranged on the move: meeting a tour pickup, sharing your location with the group, calling a taxi back from Naama Bay, or checking a message from the hotel. Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt and WE run Egypt’s mobile networks and publish coverage on their own websites. At sea and in the desert no plan can promise signal, so download offline maps before a Giftun or Sinai day. Our plans for Egypt and other destinations list what each plan includes and which countries it covers.
Setting it up before you fly
Installing at home saves the arrival hall for passport control, not settings. You install the travel eSIM through the Simtegre app at home over Wi-Fi before departure, so nothing has to be done on arrival — no QR code to hunt for, no shop, no passport registration. Our installation guides for each phone show how to set the travel line for data and switch data roaming on for it. Then turn off the option that lets data fall back onto your UK line when the signal dips — a weak signal on a boat should not become a roaming charge. If the line does not connect once you are there, work through eSIM installed but no data abroad in order.
Keeping your UK number, and entry documents
Your UK line stays installed and on for texts, so bank codes and your airline’s messages about the flight home still reach you; your carrier’s terms decide whether received texts and calls in Egypt are charged. Entry documents are outside this post: as of 2026, check Egypt’s official e-Visa portal and the UK government’s foreign travel advice for Egypt on GOV.UK, including any rules that differ for a stay limited to the Sinai resorts.
